V&A Shoes, a family owned business, has been West Michigan's footwear leader since 1923. When William Van Dis opened V&A Bootery in downtown Kalamazoo, Time Magazine had just published its first issue, Yankee Stadium opened its doors in the Bronx, NY., and Warren G. Harding was president.
His son, Robert began his V&A career right after WWII, continuing the excellent business acumen of his father and community engagement. Bill Van Dis, president of V&A Shoes, followed his grandfather, father, and uncles into the family business in the early ‘80’s and continues to help the business to thrive. Today, V&A has four locations in West Michigan featuring top brands like Ugg Australia, Clarks, Keen, Merrell, Dansko, ECCO, and more.
The flagship store is in Downtown Kalamazoo (same location since 1923, although it has doubled in size). Our Portage branch was opened in the Southland Mall Annex on S. Westnedge in 1980. Jeff Gibson is V&A’s vice president and has run the Southland store for over 20 years. In the early 2000's V&A opened another branch in downtown St. Joseph. Most recently, V&A opened its 4th location on 28th street SE, Grand Rapids and is managed by Dan Van Dis. V&A Shoes has become a community institution while supporting four generations of the Van Dis family.
